Join us and Joan Strassmann on July 16 to discuss her book "Slow Birding: The Art and Science of Enjoying the Birds in Your Own Backyard" We will gather at 7pm at the Willowbrook Mill at 201 Mill St Northport, MI. This FOLTL event is free and open to the public. Many birders travel far and wide to popular birding destinations to catch sight of rare or “exotic” birds. In Slow Birding, evolutionary biologist Joan E. Strassmann introduces readers to the joys of birding right where they are. In this inspiring guide to the art of slow birding, Strassmann tells colorful stories of the most common birds to be found in the United States—birds we often see but might not have considered deeply before. For example, northern cardinals thrive in the city, where they are free from predators. White brows on a male white-throated sparrow indicate that he is likely to be a philanderer. This essential guide to the fascinating world of common, everyday birds features: detailed portraits of individual bird species and the scientists who have discovered and observed them advice and guidance on what to look for when slow birding, so that you can uncover clues to the reasons behind specific bird behaviors bird-focused activities that will open your eyes more to the fascinating world of birds Slow Birding is the perfect guide for the birder looking to appreciate the beauty of the birds right in their own backyard, observing keenly how their behaviors change from day to day and season to season.

Join us on July 9 for the first of the 2024 FOLTL Summer Writers' Series authors, Donald Lystra and his newest book 'Searching for Van Gogh'. All author talks begin at 7pm and will be held at the Willowbrook Mill located at 201 Mill St Northport MI. This FOLTL event is free and open to the public. Our July 9 evening will be in honor of Nancy Giles, longtime Friend of the Library and Summer Writers' Series chair. It's fall of 1963 in a city in America's industrial heartland. Audrey Brubaker, rejected by her family and community but determined to build a life for herself, becomes the unlikely mentor to Nate Walker, a math and science prodigy who has turned to art in an effort to cope with the death of a revered older brother. In a relationship that borders on love but never quite seems to get there, Audrey gives meaning to Nate's artistic aspirations, introduces him to life's hard edges, and helps him find courage. Together they set off on an ill-fated mission: to recover Nate's brother's body from a military cemetery in northern Michigan. Along the way, secrets are uncovered and boundaries are crossed which will change Nate's life forever. But in a heart-wrenching ending, it is Audrey who will need to tap the well-spring of Nate's empathy for her own redemptive needs.
